Hanoi is unique - I've never seen anything like it. Its hot and dusty, crowded and noisy, horns constantly blaring, people constantly on the move and nothing stands still - but turn a corner and its incredibly beautiful and tranquil. Flowers burst from every corner, people start their day with dancing and exercise, tai-chi and meditation and the way that the modern world sits alongside...

Vietnam Top Gear tour day 11 - Hanoi City Tour

Today was the last official day of the tour and our last day together as a group. Most of the group juped in a bus and headed off to see some of the Hanoi landmarks - first of which was the war memorial. With so much to see outside I was a bit disappointed that I ran out of time to see the rest inside the main building. I've highlighted some of the plaques that were beside the displays as it really shows the pride and patriotism that the North Vietnamese had during the war. Its hard to...

Vietnam Top Gear tour day 10 - Nghia Lo to Hanoi

Today was our last day on the bikes and I'll miss my little, under powered 150cc Chinese LIFAN cruiser. Even though the bike I started the tour on gave up the ghost and started making some nasty clunking noises a couple of days ago, they had another one ready for me to jump on without missing a beat. Our first stop was at a timber veneer and plywood making factory (as with most of stops, it was just on the side of the road in a little village) and it was fascinating to see how the raw logs...

Vietnam Top Gear tour day 9 - Mai Chau to Nghia Lo

Our last full day of riding through the mountains today and the country put on an amazing show for us. Just out of Mai Chau we stopped by the side of the road at some rice paddies and the most amazing morning light - I was in photographic heaven and could have stayed here for hours. If I'd bought my gum boots I would have down there with them. From here we continued on through winding roads and spectacular scenery until we stopped for a snack and to wait for the ferry. Many families in the village of Mai Chau have converted their homes to homestays to supplement the village income. We stayed at one of these and it was a night to remember. We got to experience some beautiful Thai dancing, lots and lots of rice wine and even some "traditional" Macarena dancing. I'm not sure how ancient it is but everyone had an amazing time. Some of the singles in the group bunked down in a shared dorm for the...

Vietnam Top Gear tour day 7/8 - Thai Hoa to Ngoc Lac and Mai Chau

A couple of days riding in this post - the little village we stayed at overnight was very quiet and it was nice to just walk around and get some food and ice cream (MIXUE makes the best ice cream cones in Vietnam). As we were getting ready to leave the hotel, I spotted a pool hall across the road - the kids were super excited to show off how cool they were and it reminded me of hanging around the "pinball parlour" as a teenager, smoking and acting tough. The good thing was that it cooled us all down from the heat and humidity. This stretch was possibly some of the most spectacular scenery of the trip as we headed higher into the misty limestone mountains and flooded rivers on our way up to Phong Nha, high in the hills. I lost count of how many waterfalls we passed.
